Brand Strategy Checklist: 40 Questions to Ask Before You Build or Rebrand Your Business

Reading Time: 5 minutes

You know that moment when you look at your business and think ‘’Something isn’t quite right anymore’’

Or that point when you finally decide to give that business idea you’ve had for a while a chance and build something from it.

We have all been at one of these points at some stage. Maybe you’re even thinking of building or rebranding your business as you read this.

Whatever the situation, there are certain questions worth answering before you start building or changing things. Because if you want to build a brand that can stand the test of time, you need to get the thinking right before you get to the visuals.

A new logo can change how your business looks.

A nice color palette can make your business feel polished.

A redesigned website can improve your customer experience.

But these are not the foundation of a strong brand.

Especially if you are building or rebranding your business, you need to first understand what you are building, who you are building it for, and what you want it to mean to the people you want to reach.

What Is A Brand Strategy And Why Is It Important?

A brand strategy is a long-term plan that guides how your brand is positioned, how it communicates its value, and how it differentiates itself so it can be recognised and remembered by its target audience.

Who are you trying to reach? What do you want your business to be known for? Why should customers choose you over the alternatives? And does the experience you deliver actually match what your brand promises?

Those are brand strategy questions to ask whether you are building a brand from scratch or considering a rebrand, because getting the strategy right before moving into visual identity, messaging, or campaigns can save you from making expensive changes later.

This article introduces 10 of the questions worth asking first. Our complete 40-Question checklist covers the full framework and gives you a practical starting point for evaluating your brand.

Why Ask These Questions Before You Build or Rebrand?

Branding is often treated as a visual exercise.

A business may decide to get a new logo, update its colours, revamp its website, or change its typography across social media. While these changes in the visual identity of the brand might give it a more polished appearance, if the thinking behind the brand stays the same, the business simply has a better-looking brand without stronger positioning.

A brand strategy helps establish that thinking.

It clarifies who the business is for, what it stands for, how and why it differs from others offering something similar, what it promises, and how those decisions should shape the way the business shows up.

Before you build or rebrand, start with the questions.

10 Brand Strategy Questions to Ask First

1. What Do You Want Your Brand to Be Known For?

If someone encounters your brand today and remembers only one thing tomorrow, what should that be?

A strong brand is built around a clearer idea of the value, experience, or position you want to own in your customers’ minds.

If you cannot clearly articulate what you want to be known for, it becomes difficult to make consistent decisions about your messaging, positioning, and customer experience.

2. Who Exactly Are You Trying to Reach?

“Everyone” is rarely a useful target audience.

A strong brand strategy requires an understanding of the specific people you want to attract. What do they need? What influences their decisions? What matters to them? What frustrates them? And what might make them choose one option over another?

The more clearly you understand your audience, the easier it becomes to build a brand that feels relevant rather than generic.

3. What Problem Are You Solving for Your Customers?

Customers are not simply buying products or services. They are often trying to solve a problem, fulfil a need, or achieve a desired result.

Ask yourself: What becomes easier, better, faster, safer, or more valuable for the customer because your business exists?

That answer can reveal a much stronger foundation for your brand than simply describing what you sell.

4. Why Should Customers Choose You Instead of the Alternatives?

Your customers already have choices. Direct competitors, established brands, cheaper options, informal providers, or simply doing nothing at all.

So what gives someone a reason to choose you?

Your answer should be based on something meaningful to the customer, not just an internal claim that your business is “the best.” Look at your competitive landscape honestly and ask where your brand can create genuine preference.

5. What Makes Your Business Meaningfully Different?

Being different is not enough.

A difference only becomes valuable when it matters to the people you are trying to reach. If your competitors can make the same claim, it may not be a meaningful differentiator.

Your differentiation might come from your product, service model, expertise, experience, accessibility, approach, or the specific problem you solve. The important question is whether that difference gives customers a reason to remember, trust, or choose your brand.

6. Why Are You Building or Changing Your Brand Now?

There should be a reason behind the decision.

Has your business evolved? Are you entering a new market? Are you reaching a different audience? Launching new offerings? Or are you trying to move away from an outdated perception?

Understanding the reason for a new brand or rebrand helps determine what actually needs to change, and without that clarity, a rebrand can become an expensive exercise in changing things simply because they no longer look or feel current.

7. What Do Your Customers Currently Believe About Your Brand?

There is a difference between the brand you intend to build and the brand customers already experience.

What do customers associate with your business today? What do they value? What do they question? What do they expect from you?

Your internal perception may not match the market’s perception, and understanding that gap can help you determine whether you need to reinforce an existing perception, correct a misunderstanding, or reposition the brand altogether.

8. Does Your Customer Experience Match Your Brand Promise?

A brand promise is only as strong as the experience behind it:

  • If your brand promises convenience but the buying process is difficult, there is a disconnect.
  • If you position yourself around premium quality but the customer experience feels careless, the visual identity will not fix the problem.

Your brand is experienced through every interaction, from the first piece of content someone sees to the way they purchase, receive support, and interact with your team.

Your strategy would need to account for the reality of that experience.

9. What Evidence Makes Your Brand Credible?

A strong brand does not rely entirely on what it says about itself. Customers need reasons to believe your claims.

Ask yourself: If a potential customer questioned my biggest brand promise today, what could we show them?

That evidence could come from customer results, expertise, testimonials, case studies, product quality, partnerships, experience, or the consistency of the experience you deliver.

10. Can Your Brand Grow Without Losing Its Identity?

A brand should be able to evolve.

Your products may change. Your audience may expand. You may enter new markets or introduce new services, but growth can also create inconsistency if there is no clear strategic foundation.

Before building or rebranding, consider whether the decisions you are making today can support where the business wants to go next. A strong brand gives the business room to grow without becoming unrecognisable.

These Questions Are Only the Foundation

The questions above are a starting point, not the entire brand strategy process.

A thorough brand assessment should also explore areas such as your brand purpose, values, positioning, personality, competitive environment, audience perceptions, customer experience, and long-term direction.

That is why we created the 40-Question Brand Strategy Checklist.

Instead of trying to figure out every strategic question from scratch, you can use the complete checklist to work through the areas that matter before you build or rebrand.
