Pandora Summer Interns’ First Experience at Lounge 101.9FM

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Listening to live radio is one thing. Stepping inside the studio and watching it unfold in real time is another.

That difference became clear when Pandora summer interns stepped into a live radio studio for the first time at Lounge 101.9FM.

They were at Lounge 101.9FM to capture behind-the-scenes video coverage for The Business Side, a weekly show by Lounge FM in partnership with Pandora, during the episode “From Booking to Destination: The Business of Travel.”

The episode featured Mrs. Ukeme Akanam-Mowete, Founder of Mahali Tours, alongside hosts Kehinde Ruth Onasoga (KRO), Ehiz and Kelechi. For both interns, it was their first experience watching a live radio broadcast from inside the studio, and it gave them a new appreciation for everything that goes into making live content feel effortless.

First Impressions: An Energy You Can Feel

For Adebimpo, the first thing that stood out was the energy of the space. Having never been inside a live radio studio before, he wasn’t sure what to expect. But once he walked in, he became aware of something that is easy to overlook as a listener: everything happening in the room was being broadcast to real listeners in real time.

There was a quiet intensity in the studio, from the activity before the microphones went live to the moment the conversation began.

For Ademilade, it was the atmosphere and deliberate setup of the studio that caught his attention. Everything seemed to have its place – from the quiet buzz of preparation to the arrangement of the studio and the awareness that, once the microphones went live, there would be no simple way to stop and start again.

Their first impressions were different, but they arrived at the same conclusion: live radio feels very different when you’re inside the room.

Watching the Hosts Work

One of the biggest highlights of the experience was watching KRO, Ehiz and Kelechi navigate their conversation with Mrs. Ukeme.

For Adebimpo, it was one of the most exciting parts of the day. The hosts moved naturally between questions, jokes, and conversation, keeping the energy up while responding to the demands of a live broadcast. What stood out to him was how effortless it looked.

For Ademilade, that ease was what made the experience particularly interesting. The conversation felt spontaneous, yet remained engaging and structured. Watching the presenters respond naturally to one another gave him a new appreciation for the skill involved in making live broadcasting sound simple.

As he put it:

“Nothing looked rehearsed, yet everything worked.” – Ademilade

When There Are No Second Takes

Being in the studio also gave both interns a firsthand look at what live content demands.

Unlike recorded content, there was very little room for do-overs. A conversation can change direction in seconds, and everyone involved has to be ready to respond.

From the cues between presenters to the way questions and answers shaped what came next, the team had to remain present throughout the broadcast.

For Adebimpo, the experience reinforced how little room live content leaves for second takes. Everyone in the room has to be alert, prepared, and ready to adapt.

Ademilade noticed the same thing. Much of what makes a live broadcast feel natural comes from the ability to respond quickly when things don’t follow a perfectly predictable path.

It is easy to hear a polished conversation and assume it simply happened. Being in the studio showed them how much preparation and intentionality go into making live radio feel effortless.

‘’Effortless content takes work.’’ – Adebimpo

Their View From Behind the Camera

While the conversation was unfolding on air, the interns had their own job to do: capture the experience from behind the camera.

That meant documenting the discussion as it happened, filming moments around the studio and capturing branding details that reflected the Lounge 101.9FM-Pandora partnership.

Being physically present also allowed them to capture the small, spontaneous moments that a camera positioned from the outside might not always catch:

The exchanges between people.
The movement around the studio.
The atmosphere before and during the broadcast.
The moments that happen naturally when nobody is consciously performing for the camera.

Those details helped bring the coverage to life. In a way, they mirrored what was happening inside the broadcast itself. The most interesting moments weren’t necessarily the most polished; they were the ones that felt real.

More Than Just a First Visit for Pandora Summer Interns

By the end of the experience, both Ademilade and Adebimpo had gained more than a first look inside a radio studio.

For Adebimpo, the experience gave him a greater appreciation for everything that goes into producing an hour of live radio – from keeping a conversation engaging to staying responsive when everything is happening in real time.

For Ademilade, it showed him how much preparation, awareness and adaptability can sit behind a conversation that sounds completely natural to the listener.

As audiences, we usually encounter content in its finished form. We hear the conversation, watch the video and move on to the next thing. But being behind the scenes changes that perspective. You begin to notice the people, coordination, spontaneity and attention that make those moments possible.

For the interns, the experience was exciting, fast-paced, and full of new observations. But more than anything, it offered a simple lesson:

“Great content may look effortless when you experience the final product, but there is always a lot happening behind the scenes to make it feel that way.” – Ademilade and Adebimpo

That is part of what makes The Business Side such an exciting platform: it creates space for conversations that connect business, people, creativity and real-world experiences.

And for Pandora’s summer interns, stepping inside Lounge 101.9FM offered a chance to see one of those conversations from an entirely different perspective.
